What is an Anaesthetist?
Your anaesthetist is a specialist doctor. After completing a degree as a (medical) doctor and basic training at the hospital, doctors may choose to focus on specialist training or general practice.
Doctors wishing to become specialists in anaesthesia must work in an accredited hospital training program for an additional five years. During this time the doctor learns valuable knowledge in the fields of anaesthesia, perioperative medicine, and intensive care.
Specialist status is granted by the Commonwealth Government when the doctor has trained and passed the examinations set by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.
